The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) launched a statewide initiative, Your Move, to address rising pedestrian and cyclist fatalities and promote healthier lifestyles. The campaign was designed to educate road users on roadway safety, encourage Ohioans to choose active transportation options like walking and biking, and enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
Ohio was facing two critical public health issues with a significant rise in fatal and serious pedestrian and bicycle crashes, coupled with high rates of chronic diseases. The state wanted to encourage more people to adopt active transportation options like walking, biking and using public transit.
ODOT and ODH addressed the state's public health crisis by launching the Your Move Ohio campaign with the help of MurphyEpson. This was one of the first joint agency initiatives of its kind in the nation. Qualitative research informed the messaging, brand and creative development, including focus groups and key leader interviews. This comprehensive initiative aimed to promote active transportation by educating the public about the benefits of walking, biking and using public transit. Through a multi-channel approach, including statewide advertising, a launch event, media relations, a robust social media campaign, toolkit, website and educational materials, the campaign successfully reached a wide audience and encouraged Ohioans to be safer on the state’s roads and adopt healthier lifestyle choices. While this was just one of numerous safety initiatives, ODOT and ODH are moving the needle. In 2024, fatalities and serious injuries on Ohio’s roadways decreased for the first time in three years.
